Real People. Real Scams. Real Lessons.

At the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) of the Association for Black Economic Power (ABEP), we believe knowledge is power and protection. That’s why it’s critical to learn from the real-life experiences of those who’ve been targeted by scams, even when the stories are hard to hear.

The Better Business Bureau’s Marketplace Trust recently highlighted powerful accounts from scam survivors, individuals who found themselves caught in fraudulent schemes that looked trustworthy, sounded convincing, and arrived at just the wrong time. These stories cover everything from fake job offers to online romance traps and impersonators claiming to be from trusted institutions.

What stands out most is how often these victims say, “I didn’t think it would happen to me.” That’s the danger. Scammers rely on our trust, our urgency, and our instincts to help, not harm.

Here’s what we’re taking away, and want you to remember:

  • Never rush to respond to unexpected financial requests, even from sources that seem familiar.

  • Always verify who’s behind the message, look closely at email addresses, links, and spelling.

  • Scammers thrive on urgency and secrecy. If it feels rushed or too good to be true, pause.

  • Report any suspicious activity to authorities and the Better Business Bureau.

We encourage you to take a few minutes to read these brave testimonies shared by real people. You’ll walk away with stronger instincts and a deeper understanding of how scams work, and how to stay one step ahead.
