Voting is one of the ways we participate in shaping our communities and choosing the people who represent us. But being prepared to vote involves more than showing up on Election Day. Taking a little time to understand the process and the issues can help you make informed decisions.
1. Know Your Registration Status
Before an election, confirm that you are registered to vote and that your information is current. If you have moved, changed your name, or haven't voted in a while, checking your registration is a smart first step.
2. Know What’s on Your Ballot
Don't wait until you are standing in the voting booth to discover who and what you're voting on. Review your sample ballot ahead of time and become familiar with the offices, candidates, and ballot questions that will appear.
3. Do Your Own Research
Look beyond headlines and social media posts. Read information from multiple reliable sources and learn about candidates' positions and the issues being considered. Give yourself time to separate information from opinions.
4. Understand How Policies Can Affect You
Pay attention to the issues that connect to everyday life—housing, taxes, education, transportation, healthcare, jobs, and the economy. Understanding the potential impact of policies can help you evaluate what matters to you.
5. Make a Voting Plan
Know when and where you can vote and what identification or other requirements apply where you live. Decide whether you'll vote early, by mail, or on Election Day, and put the date on your calendar.
Being prepared gives you the opportunity to participate with greater confidence. Take the time to learn, ask questions, and make your voice count.
