ARISE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION
My name is Alexa Young
Formerly known as Village Financial Credit Union, this project began in July 2016 when the community voted that a Black-led financial institution was imperative. The idea originated from the North Minneapolis community, leading to the formation of the Association for Black Economic Power (ABEP) to carry out this work. On July 27, 2022, the community voted to change the official name to Arise Community Credit Union.
In March 2024, Arise CCU received its charter from the Minnesota Department of Commerce, marking the first new credit union charter awarded in 23 years.
Arise Community Credit Union (Arise CCU) is a Black-led financial institution based in North Minneapolis, established to address systemic financial challenges impacting Minneapolis residents, particularly people of color. Its mission is to serve as a culturally responsive financial hub, delivering affordable financial resources to build and sustain a resilient, financially healthy, and empowered community.
WHEN WILL ARISE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION OPEN TO THE PUBLIC?
Arise Community Credit Union will open with online banking on June 19, 2025 (Juneteenth). You will be able to access your personal banking needs via the app and website.
WHAT MAKES ARISE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BANKS AND CREDIT UNIONS?
Arise Community Credit Union (Arise CCU) is a Black-led financial institution serving Hennepin and Ramsey County. Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are member-owned — meaning the people who use the credit union also have a say in how it operates. Arise CCU focuses on helping people build wealth, improve financial knowledge, and access fair financial services, especially for communities that have often been left out of the banking system.
HOW CAN I BECOME A MEMBER OF ARISE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION?
Arise CCU is Black-led, and open to all. Membership is open to individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in Hennepin and Ramsey County in Minnesota. Arise CCU encourages membership regardless of economic or social circumstances, aiming to provide accessible financial solutions for all.
