the minnesota department of commerce charters minnesota’s

First Black-Led Credit Union

The Minnesota Department of Commerce has officially chartered Arise Community Credit Union (Arise), marking a historic moment as Minnesota's first black-led credit union and the first new credit union in the state in more than two decades.

Making a difference

We are a nonprofit organization created to establish a Black-led financial institution to address systemic financial challenges impacting Minneapolis residents, particularly people of color. Additionally, as a community development organization, ABEP seeks to impact the underserved communities it serves from the standpoint of affordable housing, workforce development, and small business acceleration opportunities.

MISSION

Our mission at the Association for Black Economic Power (ABEP) is to promote economic independence, multi-generational wealth, and community development for Black families and businesses.

OBJECTIVE & GOALS

Our objective is to create a more just and equitable society by providing resources, education, and support to Black-owned businesses and individuals, and by advocating for policies that promote economic inclusion and equity. Our ultimate goal is to build wealth and economic power within the Black community and to promote economic self-determination as a means of achieving social and political equality.

VISION

Remove social stigmas and provide a solid financial foundation for our people to move from existing to thriving by creating a cooperative Northside focused ecosystem of community partners working toward the common goal of building and sustaining wealth for the Black diaspora that stays circulating in our community.
